disturbing and sad

This is probably the best write-up, in that it tells the story for you.

But here’s another and the police report (via The Smoking Gun). Really just so sad.

yay procrastinate

I have about three specific things I should be working on right now, but for some reason can’t focus well on any of them.

I notice that I’ve been more likely to misspell things lately — tending to use homophones like your/you’re or right/write. I *never* used to do that. I have, however, been reading lots of student submissions for my lit class, where that is more common (high school). I think I need to bury myself in books post-haste, as clearly I am absorbing that which I read.

I got one of the McDonald’s Fruit & Walnut salads last night, and had it for breakfast this morning. It was really quite good. Sliced apples and grapes, walnuts (they tasted sugared), and some yogurt. I may have to get it again.

My latest fast-food fascination has been with Chick-Fil-A. I’ve been getting their chargrilled chicken sandwich and replacing the fries in the combo with a fruit cup. What an easy idea, why don’t more fast food places do that?

We’ve been eating a lot of fish lately. It’s easy to cook up with rice as a casserole. When it was getting colder I was all set to make some beef stew, but now it’s not been as chilly out. I’m debating on whether I should make the stew anyway, it sounds rather good right now. I don’t have any carrots, but I could do it with potatoes and apples.

My mind is wandering, I’m trying to come up with ideas for a chemistry with food class (thus the random food thoughts). I have a few good ideas already, but I’m trying to keep the whole tone light and fun, and not get too bogged down with technical details while still giving good chemistry information. The balance is harder than it seems. Maybe I need to go watch myself some Alton Brown…

BMI Illustrated

Blogger Kate Harding has put together a Flickr set “to demonstrate just how ridiculous the BMI standards are.” I have to admit I found it fascinating. It makes it seem that the BMI standards are closer to actor/actress weights than they are to the weights of normal people. (My head’s weight hierarchy seems to have model at the bottom, actors/actresses in the middle, and normal joes on top. Your mileage may vary.) It’s definitely worth viewing.

Fall really, really back?

I remember reading a while ago about how the daylight savings time changes were actually as big a deal as the Y2K updates, at least in terms of travel, since international timelines already accommodated our eccentricity in changing the times around, and were programmed to do so. As it nears 2am (or really 1 am), I wonder idly if anything will come of it.
