Ahh, Holidays

I just got done baking gluten-free cupcakes to take with us when we go to visit Sean’s family this evening — his mother discovered she was allergic a little over a year ago, and I feel bad that she can’t have the usual holiday desserts. (Yes, I know I should make cheesecake, but I’m saving that one.) I was out of lemon juice, and the rice flour had the baking soda pre-mixed, so I substituted a tiny amount of pickle juice and a teaspoon of vinegar for the tablespoon of lemon juice the recipe called for. (I figure none of it will be tasted, it’s all to make it rise, but just in case I figured the dill was closer to lemon than straight vinegar was…) I added a little extra vanilla extract to compensate flavor-wise. I hope it turns out tasty, right now the apartment smells like cocoa.

We’ll be visiting with my family tomorrow. I have gifties, but I still need to wrap them. (Mostly gift bags, so it should be easy.)

Hope everyone has a lovely holiday (if you haven’t had a lovely holiday already).

WGA strike stuff

This site may be the funniest thing I’ve seen yet. Found via Whedonesque.

And other than that, I, of course, loved this:

writing whirlygigs

I haven’t written any poetry in a while. I have this story swirling in my subconscious — I’ll catch a scene in my head, or a bit of conversation, but it doesn’t seem ready to come out on paper yet. I keep telling Sean little bits, sometimes the same little bits, that make it clever or interesting, but it doesn’t seem to have plot yet. That’s probably my failing right there, that I keep waiting for it to have a point before I start writing. I hate the feeling that I might start to work on something that fizzles and goes nowhere, though.

yogurt and packaging

I’m disappointed to see that Dannon has stopped putting lids on their yogurt — it’s what often made me buy them instead of other brands. Since there was no lid and Yoplait was on sale, I wound up buying it instead. I feel slightly like a traitor.

Due to the aforementioned sale, I bought a couple of the Yoplait Light Smoothies. I find them surprisingly tasty! If you shake them enough that they are airy it’s very nice, which surprises me a bit as I wasn’t sure I liked the idea of drinking yogurt (though I love lassis, so I have no idea where I came to the conclusion that I wouldn’t like yogurt smoothies). If you don’t shake it enough it’s a little thick, but still not bad. This is my conclusion after the two smoothies I’ve had. I will be buying more, especially if I can catch them on sale. I liked the strawberry better than the peach, but I think that’s because I shook the strawberry one more.

The packaging on the smoothies is quite substantial, by the way. (And type 2 recyclable, if you do that sort of thing.) I like the idea that I could seal it up and save part for later if I wanted to, even if I rarely (read: never) do it.
