Mmmm Baby Food!
Say yay for baby food!

Tuesday’s trial of sweet potatoes.
Actually, she had no idea what to do with food in her mouth. But first attempts are down, and she wasn’t at all unhappy about trying it, she just found it strange. Unfortunately I think Wednesday’s vaccinations made her feel a little bad, so she hasn’t been eating as well generally. We just tried pears. (We got jarred organic for this, they’re much more tangy than I expected for baby food pears: I thought they’d be more sweet. I may have to try making them.) And in three more days I think we’ll do baby food oatmeal…

First Food Sweet Potato Success
We still haven’t actually fed Lana sweet potatoes, but finally I do have something of the right consistency, thanks to a suggestion from Michelle.
I washed the sweet potato, stabbed it multiple times with a fork, and placed it in a bowl.
I microwaved it for 5 minutes, flipped it and microwaved it for 5 more minutes.
I suspect I did two things wrong: I probably didn’t need to microwave it quite that long, and I left it for about 15 minutes afterward instead of getting to it more quickly.
When I first cut it open, I thought it was too dried up to be of use. When I picked at it, though, there was a layer of perfectly mushed sweet potato by the skin, just under the part I thought was too dry.
I scraped that off and put it in a bowl with a little water, and I have a lovely bright orange mush that doesn’t seem at all lumpy or fibrous. It tastes good, too.
I wasn’t able to get a lot out of it, but plenty for a baby feeding.
Sean works tonight, so I don’t want to feed Lana her first food, but I have some great mushy sweet potato to start with now. And microwaving it is definitely the way to go. I imagine baking would have the same effect, but the microwaving takes a lot less time. (I’m now wondering if maybe I didn’t boil the last one long enough, or if it was a particularly stringy sweet potato, though it didn’t seem unusual to me at the time.) At any rate, nuking it was easier.
And I’ll bet I get better at it with practice. (Thanks, Michelle!)
