We had a wonderful July 4th weekend. Mostly it was quiet – we had long afternoon naps on Friday and Saturday, kiddie pool time with the little one, food and good times. On Sunday we went out to the winery for the Independence Day cookout with the Deals, live music (Lana loves listening to people play and sing) and Lana was basically a complete charmer with the people there. She’s getting much less shy about strangers. Then home for a nice nap, and out to see fireworks!

(I’ve been playing around to see how I like using Flickr for images. It seems a little more user friendly than I remember.)

Lana liked the fireworks. She was a little uncertain at first, as we were close and they were really loud, but she clapped and got excited. I was glad we went.

Sean was not particularly happy about the hour it took us to get home, but eh. Next year we may end up staying home to watch the neighbor’s fireworks instead.

Monday was more food and company. Lana has been saying “Unk Ska” at odd times (Uncle Scott) ever since. She had lots of fun playing with Scott and Kayla. All in all a very nice weekend. I could take more of these.

Well, it’s about the saddest reason I can think of to have a 4-day weekend. Senator Byrd has been there for as long as I’ve been alive, and he has always put WV foremost. He didn’t look to give WV luxuries – he worked to give us necessities, so we could build to something better. I’ve never known a WV without him, and he’ll be missed.

I’m looking forward to taking Lana to see fireworks. I think she’ll love the kabooms (hopefully they won’t scare her) and I’m excited to see it. I love fireworks. Sunday will be a very long day, but it should be a fun one as well.

I need to get lots and lots of pictures up (yeesh have I fallen behind) and by the time the weekend’s out I hope I’ll have more to add.

Lana has been adorable. She can make many of the animal sounds when reading Moo Baa La La La (including saying “La la la!”). She’s been trying to eat with utensils (messy! but cute!) and I’m trying to get her to ask for things she wants, even it’s only with a single word.

We have Father’s Day plans at the Richwood Grill. Will be delicious!

Today I attended a CLE session on Estate Planning. I’m not actually planning any estates, but the CLE requirements are due this year, and I needed the live credit. Also, it’s a topic I still love learning about.

<public service announcement>

Whenever I attend one of these, I am reminded of how important it is that people get their affairs in order. It may be depressing to contemplate, but you need to know who you want to take care of things when you’re gone, from your kids to your cats.

And what if you’re not gone, but incapacitated in some way? Who do you trust to make medical decisions for you? Do you know who will take care of the finances? How about taking care of the house?

Do you want your loved ones to be forced to decide when it’s time to let you go, if you’re only being kept alive by machines? Or do you want to make that decision for yourself, now, so they don’t have to?

Wills, powers of attorney, living wills… find out what they are and why they’re important.

</public service announcement>

I was afraid I wasn’t going to get into this one, since Morgantown’s session was technically full, but I went to see if there were some no-shows and I could slip in. Two no-shows actually got me a spot, but on top of that they decided to let anyone who wanted in to attend (as long as you didn’t mind sitting without a table spot). I went ahead and sat away from the table anyway – I didn’t mind that.

And getting those credits today means that with the other CLE I already have scheduled in this month, I’m officially on track to get it all done it time. I would have gotten it in regardless, but I was worried about all the different sessions I’d need to attend if I couldn’t get this one in. Hooray for something working out easily! There’s been a dearth of that lately.

8 hours closer to another two years of my law license.
