Redheads: Delirium

delirium

Delirium is a character in the DC Vertigo series The Sandman written by Neil Gaiman.  While her hair is technically multicolored, I notice that several (not all) of the artists make the bulk of it red, as if that were her true hair color to which the other colors are applied.  I am counting her among the “redheads” for that reason, and also because it amuses me to do so (which would probably be reason enough to her).

Delirium is the youngest of the Endless.  She used to be Delight, but she changed for reasons no one knows.  She often seems random, mostly appearing interested in fun and whimsical chaos, enamoured of bubbles and butterflies.

Redheads: Black Widow

blackwidsneak

Black Widow is a Russian spy in the Marvel Comics universe.  Her real name was Natasha Romanoff. Though she was an enemy at times, she wound up being brought over to the good guys. Apparently she is going to play a role in the upcoming Iron Man film: Don’t worry, I left out saying anything about the character I thought would be a total spoiler (not that I would have said much more anyway). Entertainment Weekly has early exclusive photos of Scarlett Johansson dressed in the black skintight Black Widow super-suit.  Click on the partial pic to go to the EW article.

Redheads: Leetah

leetah

Leetah is a character from the comic series Elfquest, which you can now read online.  Leetah is the healer of the Sun Villagers, who winds up in a relationship with Cutter, chief of the Wolfriders (whose story it is you follow for most of the series).  She has dark toned skin and auburn hair.

Leetah is written as a character to admire.  She is generally cool and calm, but at times can be deeply affected by her emotions. As a healer of exceptional skill she is not used to things that don’t go her way, and can be stubborn or foolish as a reaction to circumstances beyond her control.

I was a great fan of the Elfquest series when I was in high school (heck, jr high, and perhaps earlier), and I reread the first four graphic novels online while I was pregnant.  It was comforting to reread a story I loved, and still feel it was well-written with beautiful art.

Redheads: Rose Red

rosered

Rose Red is a character in the DC Vertigo series Fables written by Bill Willingham. She is the sister of Snow-White.  Her character is loosely based on the fairy tale “Snow-White and Rose-Red”, though in the Fables series the Snow-White from that fairy tale is the same Snow-White from the more commonly known story, and Rose Red has grown up quite a bit differently.

Rose Red is rambunctious, a party girl, and embarrassing to the more demure and professional Snow-White. It seems she has always had to live in her sister’s better-known shadow.  Though Rose matures in the series, she always seems to retain a bit of that wild-child.

(Amusingly, when I was younger and reading all the fairy tales, I always imagined that Rose Red had her own story somewhere, just like Snow White did, if only I knew where to find it…)
