Redheads: Kiryuu Touga

touga

Touga is a character in the anime series Revolutionary Girl Utena.  Part of what makes his character intriguing is that we are uncertain about him.  He is both tender and ruthless, the confusing anime badboy we hope will redeem himself with some word or action.

Touga is president of the Student Council with whom the protagonist, Utena, must duel in succession in order to try to discover the secrets of both Ohtori Academy and, possibly, her own half-remembered past.

Redheads: Jessica Rabbit

Jessica Rabbit was the surprisingly faithful wife of Roger Rabbit in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit.  She wasn’t bad, she said, “just drawn that way.”  She was quite the sensation for a time, an exaggeration of the pin-up model redheads we’ve seen before.  And she will do anything she has to in order to keep her rabbit husband safe.

Though her character has gotten a lot of flack for her unrealistic proportions, it seems to me the animators and writers are exaggerating her to a purpose: She’s the stereotypical red-haired bad girl, the one the hero isn’t supposed to go home with in the end.  That her personality is at odds with the way she’s drawn is, after all, the point.

Redheads: Gossamer

gossamer

At first he didn’t have a name at all, and then he was referenced as “Rudolph” in the credits, and then finally he was called “Gossamer” by Marvin the Martian, a name that seems to have stuck since, well, he was anything but.  This big hairy orange monster is a favorite for fans of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons, even though he only appears in three of the old shorts.

For as long as it remains up on YouTube here’s the second of the shorts the monster can be found in, “Water, Water Every Hare.”

Redheads: Philip Fry

I had been thinking that I wanted to open up my “red haired” posts to encompass both sexes, and with the announcement that Futurama is going to be coming back to television with all new episodes (thanks, Jon) I figure now is as good a time as any!

Philip J. Fry is the main character of the series Futurama.  He winds up being cryogenically frozen for a thousand years, and needs to make his way in the future. He winds up working as a delivery boy for a descendant’s delivery company, and has several amazing and improbably adventures, including one where he travels back in time to become his own grandpa.

He winds up trying very hard to win the heart of Leela, one of the first people he meets in the future.  While she rejects him at first, she winds up giving him just enough hope to continue pursuing her.

Here’s the very beginning of Fry’s story, how he winds up in the future through a series of misadventures on New Year’s eve 1999:

Fry is a dreamer and a slacker, but he is a kind person, whose heart is in the right place.  I look forward to seeing more of his adventures in 2010!
